Salt Sabouraud Dulcitol (SSD) Broth is a selective and non-differential medium used in qualitative screening procedures for the cultivation and selection of Candida auris, an emerging pathogen with multidrug resistance. SSD Broth is used as an enrichment step to support growth Candida auris, which can be present in complex skin samples. Multiple published methods are available and include use of a pre-enrichment step (utilizing SSD Broth) with subsequent subculture onto Salt Sabouraud Dulcitol Agar or a chromogenic medium such as Chameleon™ COLOREX™ Candida Plus. Hektoen Enteric (HEK) Agar is a selective and differential medium used for the isolation of enteric pathogens. Compared to other enteric differentiating media commonly used, HEK Agar increased the isolation rate of Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp. This was accomplished by increasing the carbohydrate and peptone content of the medium in order to counteract the inhibitory effects of bile salts and indicators. Fluid Thioglycollate Medium (FTM) with Indicator is a general purpose medium recommended for sterility testing and for the cultivation of anaerobes, aerobes, and microaerophiles. Casein and yeast extract provide nitrogen, essential vitamins, and amino acids. Glucose provides a carbon source, sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance, and L-cystine and sodium thioglycollate act as reducing agents. This is supported by a low amount of agar, which reduces the oxygen permeability through the medium. Resazurin is an oxidation indicator. S2Media™ LB Agar, Miller's Formulation, with Ampicillin-50 is a selective and non-differential medium recommended for the cultivation and maintenance of recombinant strains of Escherichia coli. LB Agar, Miller is a nutritionally rich media developed by Lennox for molecular genetics studies. This formulation contains 10.0g/L of sodium chloride, compared to 5.0g/L in LB Agar, Lennox.
